PROJECT SPOTLIGHTING

As the world changes around us, it's getting more and more important to shop local and have art and artists in your community. As a small business owner I see the impact of 'shopping small' every day, and it makes me proud to be in such a great community. Thanks to Instagram, I can showcase the local talent of our employees and neighbors, which will highlight the impact you all have made on me, our team and our community. I am are calling this series “Spotlighting”. I am the first entry, hope you enjoy and thank you for your continued support.

ESTABLISH SPOTLIGHT
This is me. I'm a doer. You'll usually find me in the middle of at least four projects at the same time, but that's just because I'm interested in most creative fields and can't commit to just one without the next idea popping into my head. I have a pretty dry & sarcastic sense of humor, which is sometimes a fault, but sometimes can break the ice. There's no way I could have gotten to where I am without the help of the people who surround me. I feel like I've been crowd-surfing at a really long, crazy concert.

ESTABLISH SPOTLIGHT his is Sami. She rocks, literally. In addition to being our longest employee, Sami has been pursuing her career in the music industry. Sami works as a producer & engineer at Tiny Telephone Recording and is a badass bassist in the band @theshesmusic . Sami is one of the busiest people I know (besides Hope who you will meet later), but still makes time to come hang with us and treat people with kindness. She is the sweetest and coolest girl who we’ve had the pleasure to see turn into a woman. And on top of all that, she laughs at all our dumb jokes.

This is Casey. Casey likes to get her hands dirty, and more recently, dyed. Casey owns her own floral & garden design business @secondnaturecreations . In addition to her own business, Casey creates beautiful things for us to sell in shop like hand dyed macrame, plant designs, window displays and is great at styling the shop. Casey is not a literal rock star like Sami, but she is a rock on our team. Casey is a constant inspiration in her floral work, her art, and in her way of life. She's a hugger, she's an out of the box thinker, a listener and most importantly she is funny sometimes.

ESTABLISH SPOTLIGHT This is Ali. Ali is like an aphrodisiac - she makes you want to be around her. Ali studied fashion design at CCA and soon after she jumped on board at Establish. Ali has been the first person to push me to make the shop reach its full potential. She has accelerated our online shop, events, workshops and all around sales, while also managing to be late to almost every shift. She has even taught each of us a few things about retail and just life in general. She has created her own line of clothing that she sells in shop and she is one of my style muses. Ali is one of those ladies you can crack a joke with or about, and she handles it. But we always hope she knows we love her.

ESTABLISH SPOTLIGHT This is Hope. Hope blows my mind. Currently Hope is pursuing a career as a firefighter, is already an EMT, and is a great (and practicing) dancer. She is an overachiever, in every sort of way. When she comes to work, she is constantly working. Those of you who have employees know how difficult this type of work ethic is to find in a human. She’s completely OCD, for example she checked all these paragraphs for proper grammar & punctuation, which also leads me to believe she may have trust issues. She has become an indispensable employee and friend. She is honest, trustworthy, optimistic and a jokester. Most of all she is a dedicated and caring person, one might say a cheerleader for the shop (without the sweet outfit), and I am so lucky she is in my life.

ESTABLISH SPOTLIGHTING This is Sara. Sara is a sparkle. Sara is one of the most amazing artists I know. Not only is she amazing at what she creates, but she has consistently encouraged me to push myself to be my best and to try new outlets in art and life. Even when I create something so ugly, she will find something positive to say about it. This quality is something I wish I had, and constantly try to gain, because the only thing that comes from saying something positive about someone’s creation is more creations from that person, and that makes us all sparkle. Sara is why Establish is open, and why Establish is still open. She continually picks me up when I am down, tells me to take a break and not feel bad about it, and she is a constant inspiration – Sara is like a walking pinterest. She is dry and sarcastic and at the same time soft and loving – making her the best friend for me. Because of all these things (and more), Sara has become a sister to me and my family, and am so excited to see where our crazy creations will lead us.

HOW TO: Know the difference between Succulents & Cacti

Hey, do you know the difference between a succulent and a cactus? This question is a pretty common one among our customers at Establish. So we thought we’d take a moment to let you know what are some of the similarities and what are some of the difference. Knowing some of these will definitely help green your thumb!

First off, all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti (say that 10 times fast)!

Succulents are known to be moisture packed due to storage of water. Succulents store water in their leaves, stems or roots and the arms - thus they can survive quite a while without being watered. Cacti have small, round, cushion-like structures called areoles in which flowers and hair can grow. Areoles usually look like small, fluffy, cotton like lumps on the body of the cactus. It is where the pricks grow out to get ya! Cacti usually have a tough, thick skin and seldom have leaves. If a succulent does not have any of these noticeable features, then it is not considered a cacti.

Planting is a key ingredient to the success of whether a succulent or cacti can survive. A clay pot is recommended with a hole in the bottom that is covered with rocks or broken clay pieces. The pot should be ½ the width of the height of the plant that is to be potted. Make sure you use a soil that is meant for cacti or succulents. You can mix your own, but you need to mix sand with soil. This can be tricky, so make sure you follow some key instructions from a nursery. When you first buy your plant, do not water immediately – wait a week and then just dampen the soil, do not soak it. *Stay tuned for our next posting about watering tips for cacti and succulents. One quick hint: when planting cacti, wear leather gloves to protect yourself from the pricks!

When taking care of cacti or succulent, remember they are water-filled plants so when looking at your plant it should look plump and filled with water. If not and it looks puckered, then water it but remove any standing water that has developed in bottom of the cactus stalk.

And don't forget - if you still have questions or need advice on what to plant or where to put your new buddy - we are here to help. Just ask and we will help you create your perfect desert oasis.

HOW TO: Shine Your Brass (and copper)

If you've ever been into Establish, you are well aware that two of our favorite metals are copper and brass. For one, they look rad. Secondly, they are (fairly) inexpensive metals. So it's really a win, win combo.

As with all metals, we know with wear comes tarnishing. A lot of times, the tarnish and patina looks amazing. We often wouldn't change a thing. But sometimes you want a little extra sparkle in your life and for that, there is cleaning! We also love life hacks to cleaning, organizing anything and everything. After some research and experimenting we found some great home remedies providing instant gratification and a mostly minimal mess.

Just a quick tip before cleaning your metals: determine if your item is actually made of brass, copper or if it's plated.

Test for Brass or Copper. Hold a magnet to your piece of jewelry. If the magnet sticks, the item is not brass, but most likely brass-plated. If that's the case, use water and mild detergent to clean, anything more abrasive (such as methods below) could damage the plating. If the item is brass follow the steps below! You can try the same magnet method for copper. If the magnet does not stick and you still aren't sure you can usually tell by the color. Copper tends to be a redish color that tarnishes and oxidizes to a greenish tone known as patina. It's also a softer metal that can dent or bend fairly easily.

METHOD 1: Lemon & Salt

1. Cut the lemon.
2. Sprinkle salt on lemon.
3. Rub salty lemon on object.
4. Rinse with warm water.
5. Dry with clean cloth.

METHOD 2: Ketchup OR Worcestershire

1. Dampen a cloth.
2. Squirt a quarter size of the ketchup or worcestershire on cloth.
3. Rub into brass or copper.
4. With a clean cloth, rub dry.

*This next remedy is for someone with a little patience, takes about an hour...and we didn't have the patience, so no photos. But we know it's a sure thing! And the best things are always worth waiting for, so...here it is:

METHOD 3: Salt, Vinegar, Flour

1. Mix equal amounts of the three ingredients.
2. Apply the paste with fingers.
3. Let sit for 1 hour.
4.  Rinse with warm water and rub dry with soft cloth.

Now that your item is clean and shiny you must be wondering, 'how fast can I dirty it up again'... We're doing the exact same thing! Keep ya posted.

Interiors: Our Fav Tips and Tricks

Constantly changing and creating new spaces is something we LOVE doing especially at little to no cost. Depending on how bad your hoarding problem of awesome things is, it may seem really daunting to start cleaning or moving things around. BUT, there are some great reasons and ways to consider changing things and space around you that make all the difference. We have put together some of our favorite tips, tricks, and reasons we use to constantly change the spaces around us for little to no cost, and providing nearly the same outcomes.

Controlling the energy in your environment: You have the ability to create and alter the energy and space around you. To make it more productive, relaxing, feel bigger than it is, or even clutter it up if you feel so inclined. It is your personal energy and the way in which you take advantage of the lighting available to you as well as the colors and organisation or lack there of. Lighter colored walls and furniture help light bounce around a room to make it feel light and airy. Keeping things off a floor, or furniture that sits above the floor, help it make it feel bigger and less cluttered.

Rearranging Wall Decor: Sometimes it is just as simple as moving around your wall decor to give space a new energy and personality. Changing wall decor or introducing new colors to a room can make all the difference in little to no time. May it be taking away, or adding, you don't actually have to get rid of any of the pieces you have. If you are feeling something new, you can redecorate based around that main piece. We recommend moving things around every few weeks.

WHAT WE DID: A little game of musical chairs! We moved items in the living room to give a new feel. Not that we didn't like the way the other pieces looked together, but just doing a new composition makes the house feel different. And satisfies that urge to move, spend or throw things out.

Adding Plants: There is nothing like a good potted plant in a lonely corner to soften the space. Having plants in your space also force you to move things around based on the light they are getting. Add them to every room, small or large, few or many. Plants are an inexpensive means to accessorising your space and adding color and texture. Many can clean household air and balance humidity. They can absorb pollutants and remove harmful gases from the air. Succulents, cacti and pothos plants are very easy to care for if you are starting out with plants indoors. We also LOVE elephant ears and ornamental fig trees. Check out our blog post "HANG ME" for more of tips on our plant loves.

WHAT WE DID: We removed some of the clutter and made it a bit more breathable, added some greens to make it feel more fresh and that's all! The problem you may say is what do you do with the other items? Well, some of the items were moved to other spaces in the house and others were stored away. We always keep a simple storage box with extra trinkets just for these occasions. Bringing items in and out of your life makes them feel new and different - without having to purchase or purge! Making you feel anew - like buying new clothes. Totally good reason to have a little 'new space christening'.

Here are a few items we currently love and stock in store. Add any of these to boost your space and add a little flare. Email us at info@establishsf.com to purchase!

SUNSET STYLE: Our Version

One thing we love about San Francisco is the always changing weather. Not only is it something to constantly talk about (even if it's to complain), but it allows for multiple wardrobe changes throughout the day. You can always find us trying to match vintage with new, neutrals with colors, and layers upon layers of course. Here are some of the looks we are into this fall season.

SOFT WASHES

We carry a mix of vintage and new at Establish, and there are tons of reasons why, one being the hard work has been done for you! Vintage items can be found with the best cuts, in great shape and soooo soft, worn in just right.

As for the new stuff - well we've fallen in love with Jungmaven. Their combination of hemp and cotton is amazing. There hasn't been a tee, dress or long sleeve that we haven't loved yet. Come check them out in store, you will not be sorry.

On Hunk #1 The perfect worn in vintage Levi's denim button up, Pendleton beanie
On Erica Jungmaven hemp beach dress, Brass Cactus agate & rope necklace, beach wrap scarf

BLUES

Blues, blues, blues. We've got your blues. From denim to cotton, everyone looks good in some shade of blue. It's an essential in all our closets. And never too late to add more.

On Erica  Establish made Sunset tee, vintage turquoise earrings
On Ali  Vintage perfect white tee, Brass Cactus rope and amber necklace, vintage denim skirt, vintage floral button up

BRIGHT DRESS, BOLD BRASS

Brass is in. Many of our favorite pieces that we have in store right now are made of brass. It's one of the few affordable metals left - and we are pretty happy about that because it's radical. Over time, brass will tarnish and change with the elements. Giving each piece a unique, one-of-a-kind look.

These two looks are simple at the same time eyecatching...which we highly recommend for all times.
On Ali  Vintage dress, Tooth N' Nail brass necklace, "The Keepah" Cuff
On Erica  JungMaven Beach Dress, Constellation Necklace, "The Keepah" cuff

STRIPES

We know it's trendy, but has it ever gone out of style? Stripes are a classic. They look good combined with other patterns, layers and textures. Everyone should have some form of stripes in their reserve.

On Erica  Jungmaven striped pocket tee, vintage black skirt, Marisa Mason turquoise necklace, brass Roost necklace
On Hunk #1  Pendleton 2015 button up, Jungmaven striped pocket tee

And don't forget - we are here to help. So if you want to try any look but aren't sure how to make it happen, just ask!

Why our customers are my favorites

At Establish, we have a constantly evolving stock. While we do carry products from some of our favorite artists around San Francisco and the US, we also carry many one of a kind pieces. From products we make in store to found treasures, you never know what you are going to find...and what you will miss if it's swooped up before you get it! Without our great customers though, we wouldn't be able to take the risks to carry what we do.

When I go on buying trips, wherever it may be (nope, I still won't tell you!), as I'm on the hunt I find things that remind me of certain customers. Even if you've visited us just one time, I still on occasion find things that will remind me of your style for some reason or another. I feel pretty grateful that you customers not only shop here, but that each of you have your own badass style!

So I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for being you - and if you don't live near and visit us - here's a little display of what some of our great customers have done with things they've found here.  (Special thanks to @savvyyogi, @thesaladdays, @danparry22, @bleep_blop, @sunshineinthefog, @xoprettyinpeach, @aftrhours, @caitathome, and @chloefleury)

HANG ME: favorite hanging plants

We know it's pretty obvious when you walk in store how much we love plants. It's been proven they can be mood boosters - so why not keep 'em around. Establish is usually full of greenery - in vintage cups, pots, hanging from the ceilings and walls. Really anywhere we can find the space to stick a plant – we will!

We love the idea of hanging plants. It is such a great alternative to a plant sitting on your window sill, staircase or wherever you may let your plant rest. There are a wide variety of plants that like to trail as they grow, and that is the beauty of hangers.

So if you're ever in the need of a quick guide to hanging plants - here's a few of our favorites:

FISH HOOK
The Fish Hook succulent (or it's real name "Senecio Succulent") is so amazing. It's a quick grower, trails all over and though it does like light can handle indirect light areas. This one has become one of my personal favorites. The fish hook looks great in macrames and are very easy to manage - yes & yes.

DONKEY TAIL
Another one from the succulent family is the donkey tail (Sedum morganianum). Easy to grow and have really neat bead like leaves. You'll find these little beads tend to drop off if you brush against them, but not to worry - these dropped beads can be placed in a container and will start to grow a new plant!

SPIDER PLANTS
One of the easiest to grow plants - you can neglect this plant, but you really shouldn't because spider plants (Chlorophytum) will help improve the quality of the air in your home or office. Spider plants also make little 'babies' that you can root and grow. They come in a wide variety of greens and whites too.

NEON POTHOS
These are a true gem. Why you may ask? Because the pothos plant (Epipremnum aureum) can handle low light situations, but this variety is neon in color. This adds such a great color to any room - especially a dark room. I've found that often I don't care for many of the low light option plants in the world - but the neon pothos has changed me. These grow relatively fast, are pretty low maintenance and can grow up to 10 feet long. LOVE.

So if you're ever in need of some new greens for your home or office, just ask. We can provide any plant for your light situation, hanging situation or just everyday plant advice. Come test us!

IN LOVE: vintage turquoise rings

Part of the love of having a store is the FIND. Finding vintage, one of a kind pieces to fill our shelves and walls is part of the thrill of what makes Establish unique.

Recently we took a ''quick'' road trip from San Francisco to New Mexico. The reason it was quick was we only had six days, and it's not a short drive. Luckily, the van drives fast.

Along the way, I got the chance to stop at multiple little shops, towns and markets to check out some of the local flair. Low and behold, what did I find? Ridiculously, amazing, beautiful – turquoise. I've always had a love of turquoise. But this trip refreshed my memory of my love like a nice jump into Ocean Beach.

I loved seeing all the different styles of turquoise jewelry and immediately fell in love with Petit Point and Needlepoint jewelry. Once I returned from the trip, I took some time to figure out what each of these pieces mean. Here's a quick low down of the difference.

NEEDLEPOINT JEWELRY
The needlepoint style has many tiny, carefully matched cabochons (is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted) with pointed ends placed in straight or curved lines and set.

PETIT POINT JEWELRY
This type of turquoise is Zuni produced and often is confused with Needlepoint. Petit Point is a slightly different version in which the stones are teardrop-shaped.

Next time your near, come in and we will show you! These rings are insane...and will never go out of style.
